Apple Releases OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1 To Correct Numerous Issues

Referencing a brief support document, today Apple has released OS 10.8.1: the first major update to OS X Mountain Lion since the revised operating system was released last month. The update is available to all OS X users on Mountain Lion via either the new Software Update functionality that’s now implemented into the Mac App Store or directly from Apple’s official website. The new and updated build of Mountain Lion 10.8.1 (12B19) offers general improvements and bug fixes:

This update includes general operating system fixes that improve the stability and compatibility of your Mac, including fixes that:

  • Resolve an issue that may cause Migration Assistant to unexpectedly quit
  • Improve compatibility when connecting to a Microsoft Exchange server in Mail
  • Address an issue playing audio through a Thunderbolt display
  • Resolve an issue that could prevent iMessages from being sent
  • Address an issue that could cause the system to become unresponsive when using Pinyin input
  • Resolve an issue when connecting to SMB servers with long names
  • Address a issue that may prevent Safari from launching when using a Proxy Automatic Configuration (PAC) file
  • Improve 802.1X authentication with Active Directory credentials.

The unusually small update, 24.2 MB total, was issued to address annoyances encountered by a large number of users on a regular basis. It’s recommended that all Mountain Lion users update to the latest version sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for additional coverage on both Apple and OS X.
